Busy August

Wow! … Festival of Quilts was amazing this year, it seems to have been totally refreshed somehow … we were so busy on our two stands, Susan Chapman Stitched Textiles and Granary Studio Students, that I didnt get a chance to take any photos … sorry … suffice to say, I handed out over 600 leaflets and signed up a further hundred people to our mailing lists for information about the classes I teach and organise at the Granary Studio… so now I am busy typing them into the system!

I am thrilled that I got a judges choice award for my quilt ‘The Building of New York’

Details of the latest programme of classes to be held here at the Granary Studio can be found on the website at www.granarystudio.com

Now back from the NEC, we are headlong into Hampshire Open Studios… Room 6 are presenting the Seven Deadly Sins and much more at the Granary, we have had loads of visitors already, again I have had no time to take many photos .. just the one of the seven deadly sins

We are having a couple of days off today and tomorrow but will re-open on Thursday right through until Monday afternoon.. tea and coffee will be drunk and lovely homemade cake will be consumed.. hope to see you all at the Granary sometime over the weekend, there will be members of Room 6 here to greet you and show you what we do …

Festival of Quilts

Festival of Quilts is next week at the NEC in Birmingham, it runs from Thursday 10th until Sunday 13th August.. I will be there with a stand QIA24 which is next to the Granary tudio Student stand, so please do pop by and say hello …

I am also part of a European Exhibition called ‘Perception’ it is the first venue for this travelling show, presented by ArtQuiltFusion. you will find us in TG1 right at the front beyond the winning quilts … do have a look, we represent eight different European countries and our styles are very different from each other … really interesting!

Hope to see you all somewhere next week! enjoy!

Festival of quilts

ok, van has been borrowed, workshop stuff packed, stand stuff packed, the three dimensional pieces of work are loaded, now ironing clothes and packing ….off to the festival of quilts early tomorrow …

i am teaching a masterclass all day wednesday, called ‘stitching from life’, students will be free machining all day, direct from primary source, no drawing on fabric ….straight to stitch, observational drawings n stitch … magic …. a few exercises in the morning and a model in the afternoon (clothed), should be fun ….

then … show opens on thursday and i will be on stand QIA 24… do come and visit me, i will be next to lynn onions so we can look after each others stands when we are not there, one of us will always be there….

I will also be demonstrating on artvango’s artist in action stand, showing the process of taking the sketchbook work into stitch… not sure when at the mo but probably on friday…pop in and see me there too!

show is on until 5pm sunday …. worth a visit… see you there!

Eastleigh College

I hope some of you managed to get along to see our end of year shows at the School of Visual Arts at Eastleigh College… it is all down now and the marking is complete.. i wont be going in again now until the beginning of September, apart from the odd pop in to check on a few things….

So now we are turning our attention to timetabling for next term, Darren is an absolute whizz at this… we have more full time students  coming than ever before… but now I want to tell you about the part time provision that i am mainly involved with …

In the new propectus from September we will be offering as follows

level 2  City and Guilds  Creative Sketchbooks, this will run on Tuesday evenings for one year from 6-9 and is a great introduction to art based techniques including print, collage and book binding

level 2  City and Guilds  Patchwork and Quilting, this will run on Tuesday afternoons for one year from 1.30 – 4.30 and introduces all techniques for patchwork applique and quilting

level 3  City and Guilds  Patchwork and Quilting, which will also run on Tuesday afternoons for four/five terms from 1.30-4.30 and is more experimental than level 2

level 3 BTEC  Building an Art, Design and Media Portfolio his runs on Moonday and Tuesday evenings from 6-9 for one year and extends knowledge of all aspects of Art, Design and Media

level 4  HNC Contemporary Art Practice, this was a brand new course this year and our first students have just completed their interim show at the end of their first year… i can highly recommend it for all students who have a level 3 qualification already… this runs on Mon eve 6-9, and Wed 2-5 and 6-9 which is 9 hours a week… students gain this qualification by developing self directed projects, students will choose which studios they wish to work in. There are choices from print, sculpture, drawing and painting, textiles, fashion, photography, video and animation

I teach on all these programmes and really enjoy all of them …. i particularly hope that the level 3 portfolio builder runs this year… it is a great course from which to progress onto the HNC, a good grounding in all aspects of the visual arts

We are a small team, with Darren Cousins and Helen Gell teaching on these programmes

We are recruiting new tutors at the moment so the plan is to be a team of six or seven in the autumn

The exciting news is that a brand new art school is nearly built on the main site, and, although we will be sad to leave Desborough behind I am sure we will enjoy the sparkling new studios… the move will of course be challenging but I have done it before and survived perfectly well, I think the current plan is to move over an extended half term.

I look forward to meeting some of you on a course at Eastleigh soon, I am sure it will be fun and challenging at the same time

Meanwhile, my attention will now turn to the Festival of Quilts which will be at the NEC Birmingham 11-14 August.. I am teaching a masteclass all day on the wednesday, day before the show opens, it is called ‘Stitching from Life’. Students will stitch by machine straight onto fabric. A day of observation and free machining …. bookings are being taken now on the FOQ website

Still waiting for some reliable summer but hope you all enjoy it when it arrives

bye for now xx

Success in Birmingham

Well we did it!

Room6 had a really successful show called ‘6 shades of Grey’ at ‘Fabric, Embroidery and Stitch’ last week at the NEC lots of lovely visitors, thank you for popping by… and, we have a second venue for the show…. not confirmed yet but it looks as though the work will be shown at the gallery at ArtVanGo! no dates but somewhen in the summer I believe…

The ‘People and Places’ exhibition with Kim Thittichai and myself, was really well received too and thank you all for visiting Kim and I there ….Kim had created some wonderful surfaces with her pieces from pebbles and shells picked up on her travels, a really lovely body of work to look at during my days sitting demonstrating …… my ‘Men at Work’ quilts will be joining my ladies from ‘6 Shades of Grey’ and another dozen or so new quilts in October at the Open European Quilt Championships in  Maastricht in October ..

Kim and I are hoping to exhibit again together, maybe in 2018 with a brand new body of work, watch this space ..it is much more fun when there is more than one of you …although we both have a lot to do between now and then!

Next for me…..

The Prague Patchwork  Meeting next week  1-3 April sees an exhibition called ‘Ambition’ from ArtQuiltFusion, a European group to which I belong … my work  will be part of this show, but sadly, I won’t be able to be there, this exhibition was in Alsace in September and will travel to Denmark in August, finishing its run in Maastricht in October as well.

Most of May will see me in Stroud in Gloucestershire, U.K. I belong to Studio21 and we have our exhibition ‘The Sewing Machine Project’ showing in the Lansdown Gallery as part of the Stroud International Textiles Festival

June/July is the end of year at Eastleigh College andour show will be different this year … we have level 3 City and Guilds Embroidery as the only pure textiles course showing. But, we have the end of the first year of our new HNC/HND Contemporary Art Practice course. I am thrilled with the course and the work that the students are creating… it is much broader based than the Foundation Degree Stitched Textiles was, with opportunities in photography, video, sculpture, print as well as the stitched textiles … do come and visit the end of year show which will run from 30 June (evening opening) 1st and 2nd July. please do come and see what we e been up to this year… we offer a level 3 course in Art, Design and Media too as  pre – cursor to the HNC, it didnt run this year so hopefully next year will different.

Just to say the city and guilds Patchwork and Creative sketchbooks is back inthe college prospectus this year so if you are interested . come and talk to us or just sign up!

August, The Festival of Quilts, I will be on QIA24 stand as usual with Lynn Onions, where we will be demonstrating …. and hopefully i will be bringing my free standing work from Romsey Abbey to the show…. i am also teaching a Masterclass called ‘Stitching from Life’ on the Wednesday which should be fun ….

Golly end of August and Room6 will be taking part in Hampshire  again at the Granary Studio , so please visit us there, tea cofee and lots of cake as usual … as well as a second hand bookshop

September, back to Eastleigh College and Granary studios classes start up again, so off we go again …

October , my solo show in Maastricht  and another year older!

November, hopefully Harrogate Knitting and Stitching Show and the Artists in Action gallery if they want me, and then the run in to Christmas… phew, thats 2016 done then, feel quite tired at the thought…

hope to see you somewhere along the way….

Festival Of Quilts 6-9 August. QIA24

Getting ready for the upcoming Festival of Quilts at the NEC in Birmingham.

I will be driving up to the courier near Gatwick tomorrow to take quilts for me, my students and friends .. so, if there is anyone else wanting me to take stuff you have the rest of today to get it to me!

Quilts are all finished, now starting to make up my teaching resources .. I will be teaching two half day workshops on the Friday and one on Sunday

I am teaching ‘Creative collage’ on Friday and Sunday, and ‘The Power of Print’ on Friday too..

I will be at stand QIA24 alongside Lynn Onions who will also be teaching in the quick and easy program

So, we will both be runnin around, but if all our arrangements have gone to plan, there will always be one of us at the stand at least!
