HNC Contemporary Art Practice

Hi everyone, I am part of the tutor team for the HNC Contemporary Art Practice which is taught at the brand new Art school in  Eastleigh College … it will be starting at the end of September and you would study for two years part time for this qualification… it is a brod based course which includes painting and drawing, textiles, sculpture, photography, film and animation and printmaking.

At the beginning of the course for the first term, you would have a go at everything with workshops in all the studios .. from then onwards you work independently for your own exhibitions using which ever medium you prefer, we have tutors in all specialities to help you… I teach printmaking and textiles predominantly ….

The hours are from 4.15 – 9.00 on mondays and wednesdays, and this course attracts an HE loan, so, unless you earn around £30,000 a year, you are not required to repay it.

Four of our graduates this year, are going onto university to study the rest of the units required for degrees/HND

We are interviewing for this coourse on Wednesday 6th September which is only next week… if you are interested then please contact me urgently, see my contact details elsewhere on this site,  or Kathy Messenger on 02380911004 at college… we need a couple more people to ensure that this course runs, we have a lot of fun and there is a lot of learning too .. do join us …

Busy August

Wow! … Festival of Quilts was amazing this year, it seems to have been totally refreshed somehow … we were so busy on our two stands, Susan Chapman Stitched Textiles and Granary Studio Students, that I didnt get a chance to take any photos … sorry … suffice to say, I handed out over 600 leaflets and signed up a further hundred people to our mailing lists for information about the classes I teach and organise at the Granary Studio… so now I am busy typing them into the system!

I am thrilled that I got a judges choice award for my quilt ‘The Building of New York’

Details of the latest programme of classes to be held here at the Granary Studio can be found on the website at www.granarystudio.com

Now back from the NEC, we are headlong into Hampshire Open Studios… Room 6 are presenting the Seven Deadly Sins and much more at the Granary, we have had loads of visitors already, again I have had no time to take many photos .. just the one of the seven deadly sins

We are having a couple of days off today and tomorrow but will re-open on Thursday right through until Monday afternoon.. tea and coffee will be drunk and lovely homemade cake will be consumed.. hope to see you all at the Granary sometime over the weekend, there will be members of Room 6 here to greet you and show you what we do …

Another Great Couple of Shows

phew.. just back from two ICHF shows, only two weeks apart firstly ‘The Scottish Quilting Show’at the SECC in Glasgow and then the ‘Fashion and Embroidery Show’ at the NEC in Birmingham … I was so busy on the aproach to these shows I didnt get to post any information about them but do put the dates in your diaries for next year …..

The Scottish Quilting Show … at SECC in Glasgow will run …           8-11 March 2018

Fashion and Embroidery Show … at NEC Birmingham will run …  15-18 March 2018

They are actually back to back next year so that will be a test of packing and re-packing! I will be at both shows next year too

But, this year ….

I had a large solo exhibition in Glasgow and I also taught some lovely ladies and gentlemen every day of the show …I taught my workshop ‘Explorng Simple Print’ using funky foam and polystyrene, and I think everyone had great fun, including me. The washing up was a bit of a challenge though with automatic taps in the loos until the lovely Jane Bolsover found me a catering sink .. she really is an amazing mover and shaker…glasgow 01glasgow 02

and all sorts of fun at the NEC two weeks later

Next…….

Well Ste Marie Aux Mines was wonderful. Very few brits make it over to see the four day festival which is a big shame ….

there are four villages involved each with several exhibitions and shuttle buses running backwards and forwards up and down the valley all day every day …. well worth a trip …

ANYWAY… next indeed, I have just finished stitching for the next exhibition which will be set up in Romsey Abbey on Monday ..the PV is 6pm on Tuesday 29th Sept in Romsey Abbey if you are nearby, but if not, exhibition is open until the end of October. I would show you some images and the flyer but at the moment I can’t upload them, no idea why, so, you will just have to visit the exhibition!

Totnes Exhibition

Just putting the finishing touches to some work for an exhibition in Birdwood House gallery in the middle of Totnes in Devon … we are a group of stitchers tutored for three weekends a year by Ros Hills and Janet Edmonds, and every other year we have an exhibition of our work. This year the exhibition is titled ‘Landmarks’ and we are hanging it on Saturday evening, then, I think, it opens on Monday and runs through the whole week. I wont be able to steward because of the distance and I start teaching again on Monday after the Easter break from college, but it should be good, looking forward to seeing everyones work… will try and post some photos when I get back.
